故事发生在20世纪50年代的罗马，一位非常有名的导演打算为自己的新电影招募一名小演员，玛达莱娜（安娜·玛格纳妮 Anna Magnani 饰）得知了此消息决定带自己的女儿玛利亚（Tina Apicella 饰）前去试镜。玛达莱娜一家人的经济条件非常的拮据，因此她将这次试镜视作是一次能够让全家人飞黄腾达的难能可贵的机会。当玛达莱娜得知演员需要在片中跳舞后，又煞费苦心的将玛利亚送进了舞蹈学校学习。她的一连串谜之操作让本就不富裕的家庭雪上加霜。与此同时，玛利亚的心理压力也越来越大，她稚嫩的小脸上逐渐失去了笑容。
